Our top 3 munch spots in Cape Town right now
Cape Town’s restaurant scene is diverse and vibrant, offering a wide range of dining options that cater to different tastes and budgets. The city boasts some of the best seafood restaurants in South Africa, along with trendy cafes, cozy bistros, and fine dining establishments. The culinary landscape is heavily influenced by local ingredients and flavours, as well as international cuisine. Cape Town also has a strong focus on sustainability, with many restaurants using locally sourced, organic ingredients and reducing waste through recycling and composting.
We’ve put together a short list of our top three new(ish) restaurants in Cape Town for a quick munch.
Galjoen
Based on Harrington Street, this restaurant offers a set tasting menu by reservation only, celebrating sustainably sourced South African seafood. “If it’s not from South Africa, it’s not on the menu,” they state. Chef Isca Stoltz, who used to be the Sous Chef at The Belly of the Beast Restaurant for three years, will now be heading up Galjoen.
Urchin Restaurant
Sushi counter? Check! Curated wine pairings? Check! Old school hospitality? Check! Check! Check! Urchin Restaurant, located at The Hyatt Regency Cape Town in Buitenchracht Street is the perfect dining destination for world-class food and wine. Chef Gerard van Staden showcases his signature seafood-based cooking here, fuelled by a life-long obsession with the elemental flavours of the ocean. His menu ignites all five senses with a combination of flavours and textures and throughout your meal, one thing stands out: Here, the fruits of the ocean are the stars.
Ramenhead
Cape Town’s CBD is booming and with that comes the addition of Ramenhead – a restaurant experience which has been described as a Neoteric Japanese African experience. The eatery is located on Church Square and is the brainchild of chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss. Expect bowls of authentic, handmade noodles, with Ramenhead being the proud owner of Africa’s only Yamato noodle machine.
Pre-dinner tipple at Upper Union
Launched mid-December last year, Upper Union is probably one of the best stops for a tipple – especially on Valentine’s Day. The showstopper bar ensures some Insta-worthy photos, but be careful – the drinks might steal the show! The restaurant and bar are part of the acclaimed MORE Family Collection, with Executive Chef Amori Burger at the steer, and a cocktail menu that has been created by the team at award-winning Just Short cocktails. Located in a heritage building in Kloof Street, the setting and atmosphere can only add romance and nostalgia to the experience.
