Sensational Sunday lunch buffet over rolling lawns
Why do South African’s love the traditional Sunday Lunch as much as they do?
The answer to this question might be obvious but we thought we’d do some investigating to find out if there is a little more meat to the story? Tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.
When considering the ideal destination for your next Sunday Lunch with the family, there are 5 key fundamentals that one should take into account:
- 1. A beautiful surrounding (preferably with a view of nature).
- 2. Accessibility, comfort and style (not taking grandma to a roadside diner).
- 3. Wide selection of the three main elements… Starts, Mains, Dessert.
- 4. Service & affordability.
- 5. Entertainment (this one isn’t essential but definitely a huge plus when available).
You may have noticed our new Event Calendar page and the listing for Sunday Buffet Lunch at The Fairways Hotel, well we thought we’d better start there for an honest review. Our adventure began one sunny Sunday in the leafy suburb of Randpark Ridge at the hidden gem called The Fairway Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort. Balata Restaurant which is located on the ground floor overlooking the stunning Randpark Golf Course is open seven days a week and has won numerous American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards.
This particular Sunday, the restaurant was packed with families, a massive 40th Birthday, a church group and a few couples scattered amongst the room. However even with such a busy house we never once felt overlooked by the staff and had a very intimate experience at our table of four adults and two rambunctious toddlers.
Now let’s get to the best part of the day. The food!
To start, there is a huge selection of cold meats, a delicious butternut and feta salad, traditional greek and Cesar salads, oysters and yummy tomato soup with freshly baked bread. Vegetarians rejoice as you will not go hungry. Main course was a cornucopia of dishes, from beef curry, roast chicken, pork and beef to rice, potatoes, roasted veggies and even Yorkshire Pudding with oxtail. Mmmm…
Dessert had to be one of the most decadent spreads we’ve ever seen. His is no exaggeration. Let us just list what was on display: melktart, chocolate squares, chocolate tart, chocolate cake, chocolate eclairs, my lord there was a lot of chocolate. For the health conscious they have fruit salad, strawberries and cream and a wide selection of local cheeses. Oh and let’s not forget the traditional bread and malva pudding with hot custard. Let’s just say that we had to order a golf cart to take us to our car after lunch.
If you’re looking for a beautiful location with the friendliest service and an abundance of mouth-watering dishes on offer then Balata Restaurant at The Fairway Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort is the only spot to consider. And we haven’t even gotten to the best part… Their Sunday Lunch Buffet only costs R265 per person. What exceptional value.
