Sizzle & Steak: Turn ‘n Tender Heats Up The Verge Centre

Turn ‘n Tender The Verge Shopping Centre

There’s something undeniably special about marking a milestone over a great meal. Our anniversary dinner at the newly opened Turn ‘n Tender at The Verge Shopping Centre in Edenvale delivered just that.

With its sleek yet inviting interior, attentive service, and a menu rooted in tradition but elevated by quality and care, this latest addition to the beloved steakhouse brand offers more than just a good cut of meat — it delivers an experience.

From the moment we walked in, it was clear that Turn ‘n Tender is aiming to become a go-to for both celebrations and casual indulgences in this buzzing part of Johannesburg. Furthermore, the new centre and restaurant came to life under the stars.

First Impressions: A Warm Welcome

On Friday evening, we walked quickly and purposefully in our long coats to escape the winter chill that froze the air. As we scaled The Verge’s escalators, Turn ‘n Tender awaited us at the top. Nevertheless, while its doors were closed to keep the cold at bay, they swung open as we approached.

Immediately, we were met with lively chatter, a warm breeze and a packed restaurant with an intimate setting. As we were shown to our table and settled into our seats, a wine list was placed in our hands and a waiter appeared at our service.

We opted for the Turn ‘n Tender Sauvignon Blanc, which was poured into our awaiting glasses. Kept cool on ice, it was the perfect pairing for a loving conversation filled with memories from other Turn ‘n Tender branches. However, somehow and for some reason, this one already had our hearts from the start.

The Service: Polished and Personal

Thami, our incredible waiter, was always nearby when needed. He anticipated our needs yet gave us space to talk whilst pondering over the menu. He also ensured our wine glasses were never close to empty — what a gem!

The Turn ‘n Tender Edenvale Branch Manager, Nick Leslie, was clearly the right man for the job. More so, his passion for hospitality was evident, and the mutual respect between him and his team shone through. Every guest felt seen and appreciated — not just served.

However, with a menu this expansive, we leaned on Thami’s top-tier recommendations.

The Menu: What We Ordered and More

Thami seemed to be a mind-reader. Without knowing how much we loved cheese, he suggested the halloumi starter — a flawless choice. The crispy, golden fingers were soft inside, finished with a bright lemon drizzle and paired with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.

Next came a special off-menu treat: a calamari and chorizo combo. The calamari tubes were tender and coated in a rich, homemade peri peri sauce. Furthermore, the chorizo added smoky depth, its flavour melting beautifully into the spicy broth.

For mains, whilst the Argentinian-style fillet came highly recommended, we opted for the classic Ladies’ Fillet with Turn ‘n Tender basting. To explore a bit, we also tried the Ribeye on the Bone — cooked American-style, as Thami suggested. The meat was sliced from the bone and finished with a buttermilk olive oil blend before hitting the grill. The result? Unforgettable.

And, whilst the dessert menu featured favourites like Malva pudding and chocolate mousse, we went for a more spirited ending: cocktails. An Espresso Martini strutted down the aisle in all its glory, followed by a Passion Fruit Mojito glistening with condensation. So, with a toast and a laugh, we sipped as the sky turned from midnight blue to starlit black.

The Verdict: A Favourite in the Flesh

Nevertheless, with full stomachs and happy hearts, we had to leave this little slice of heaven and brave the cold once again. Yet, our anniversary couldn’t have been celebrated in a more fitting way — surrounded by good food, lovely people and the perfect intimate setting.

Therefore, it is no wonder Turn ‘n Tender has been a firm favourite since 1977, when four brothers who loved steak decided to build a legacy around it. Over the years, they’ve remained true to that original passion. This commitment has earned them accolades like Best of Joburg and Best of Ekurhuleni in recent years. Subsequently, it is a testament to their community-rooted spirit and the love for food they continue to share.

Whilst The Verge Shopping Centre in Edenvale is only a few months old, it has already cemented itself into its surrounding community, offering convenient yet sophisticated experiences. More so, Turn ‘n Tender is one of the stand-outs of the new centre and is sure to draw on its clientele base from across Johannesburg in this new venture.

Therefore, Turn ‘n Tender Edenvale isn’t just another branch. It’s a destination — one that delivers flavour, feeling, and fantastic memories.
