Vibrant Design and Flavours at Nando’s Newest Store in Vergelegen Plein Shopping Centre
Stepping into the new Nando’s Casa at Vergelegen Plein feels like entering a vibrant celebration of South African creativity. From the moment you walk in, you’re enveloped in a lively atmosphere defined by the dynamic patterns of Spamandla Mdunyelwa, a rising star from the Hot Young Designers (HYD) program.
On the 24th of July, influencers and media gathered at the official opening event to experience this remarkable fusion of rich flavours and striking design. The space immediately grabs your attention with bold burgundy tones and Mdunyelwa’s captivating ceiling patterns. The design, featuring ebony timber accents and cork sheet inlays, creates a warm and culturally rich environment. It’s a space where culturally inspired tile patterns and bespoke backrest details tell stories of South African heritage.
The contemporary furniture pieces, crafted by innovative local designers, incorporate elements of traditional craft like weaving, linking heritage techniques to modern manufacturing processes. Chairs by Naturalis, planters by Plantr, custom hand wash units by Saks Corner, and bollards by Pedersen and Lennard all pay homage to South African creativity. The lighting by Mash T and Adobe Design enhances this cultural essence, making the restaurant a cohesive and immersive experience.
Itumeleng Mogotsi, General Manager of the Cape Region, emphasised Nando’s dedication to supporting local talent and communities. “We love celebrating local talent. The Vergelegen Plein restaurant is just one perfect example of that as it features Spamandla Mdunyelwa’s talent for design. Throughout the world, opportunities for artists to feature their work through this programme are created. The opening of the new store highlights our dedication to working with communities, employing people from local areas, and creating opportunities for growth,” Mogotsi explained.
The Vergelegen Plein restaurant stands as a testament to the power of local design talent and the impactful partnerships that nurture it. Mdunyelwa’s vibrant patterns and the thoughtful integration of South African design elements make this new Nando’s a place to enjoy not just great food but also a celebration of creativity, culture, and community. Here, great design and great food truly go hand in hand.
