Why our favorite restaurant is the Shortmarket Club

Interior of Shortmarket Club Rosebank

We’re fortunate to live in a country where the food is exceptional, especially the restaurant scene in Jozi. Cape Town and Jozi can battle the matter at a later stage but the fact is The Shortmarket Club Rosebank has moved to Jozi, inside Oxford Parks.

And yip, it is our number one spot to dine at this month, and perhaps next month too. Furthermore not only is it one of the best restaurants in the city but it is the perfect location for a winter dining experience. Warm and cosy, intimate and snug this luxurious eatery is oh so decadent and rather toasty. Secondly the ambience is one of sheer sophistication and character. Thirdly this spot ticks all the boxes from good music to beautiful lighting. The ambiance sets the tone to colours which help stimulate the palette to exceptional food. This is the crown jewel of Jozi. And did we mention the service is outstanding?

Award winning chef Luke Dale Roberts has transformed the space into a masterpiece. With Mid-Century style glazed windows, deep rich tones and a few old fashion touches. Our favorite is the drinks trolley, an ode to everything being delivered in style and with a touch of finesse.

Opinions swirl around what to order but we have the perfect combo for a ten-out-of-ten three course dining experience. Paired with a bottle of their finest, the rich full-bodied Meerlust Rubicon, our meal will never be forgotten.

Start with the calamari pancake special as well as the beer battered tempura fried calamari with a velvet smooth Japanese style mayo. Seconds please! For mains we recommend the pepper crusted fillet (medium) served with a watercress emulsion. Just magnificent. Ending off with the cherry on top, the spiced banana with homemade peanutbutter ice-cream. The dish was oh so creamy, served with a cocoa cake and banana flambe and topped with a dollop of pistachio creme. Everything on the menu is made of dreams…

Simply put this is a restaurant we want to return to again and again and again. If they were giving out Michelin stars in South Africa then they deserves three.
