Sophiatown is a vibrant and powerful musical drama, being revived with a fresh young cast under the experienced direction of Aubrey Sekhabi, bringing its timeless music and story to a new generation of audiences.

Set in the iconic Johannesburg suburb once known as the “Chicago of South Africa,” Sophiatown captures a dynamic world where shebeen queens, gangsters, politicians, and Black and White Bohemians coexisted in a bold, electric atmosphere of music, style and resistance.

During the restrictive 1940s and 1950s, this unique community became a cultural hub that helped shape South African urban identity, producing some of the country’s most influential musicians, writers, artists, journalists and political voices.
