It’s been said that having a workout partner doubles the motivation, halves the excuses and adds a layer of fun. Also, if that partner happens to be your significant other, the benefits extend beyond the proverbial gym. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most diverse, naturally striking running routes across the country to enjoy with your partner.
Located in Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, 10km from Johannesburg’s city centre, Klipriviersberg Outer Loop is considered a moderate challenge, spanning 11.6km. Particularly popular among birdwatchers for having over 200 species of birds, larger game like zebra, red hartebeest and black wildebeest also roam the grounds. In addition, the surrounding fauna and flora boast unique natural beauty, as well as a fair amount of shade. Entrance is free.
Two of the shorter routes on our list, Echo Ravine (1.9km) and Mushroom Rock (4.2km) are both located in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park and are very close to each other. Completely surrounded by lush greenery, Echo Ravine offers waterfall views looking up from the lower part of the valley. Conversely, Mushroom Rock is much steeper, offering stunning views from above. Open all year round, the best time to take on these trails is between March and May.
Open all year round, Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve is exceptionally beautiful this time of the year. A birdwatcher’s paradise and home to various small game species like Springbuck, Zebra, Blesbok and Impala, Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve Trail is a moderately challenging route that spans 4.8km. Something of a hidden gem, the reserve doesn’t allow mountain biking, cycling, picnics or braais. As a result, you are guaranteed an intimate experience.
Located at an elevation of 228m, the 5.8km point-to-point trail starts in the magnificently leafy Constantia Nek and runs towards Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The wildly popular route offers a moderate challenge but, with one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World as a backdrop and one of the most stunning gardens in South Africa as a destination, every metre is breathtaking.
Another one of the shorter routes on our list, Rugbos Forest Trail measures 3.2km and is located very close to Nature’s Valley. Running through a towering, lush forest, this route is home to beautiful birds like the Knysna Loerie, the Emerald Cuckoo and the Narina Trogon, making it one of the favourite hiking or running routes among the birdwatching community. Managed by South African National Parks, entrance fees start at R55 for South Africans.
Located near Stellenbosch, The Jonkershoek Waterfalls trail (suitable for hiking and running) spans 9.8km and is one of the most popular trails in the Western Cape. As a result, it can get really busy, so an earlier start is well worth considering. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jonkershoek Nature Reserve boasts over 1100 plant species and a wide variety of birds and animals. However, the stunning waterfalls along the route are our favourite feature – so romantic. Permits can be purchased at the gate at R50 per person.
Also based in the Jonkershoek Valley, Assegaaibosch is a significantly smaller reserve, offering a more private, potentially more romantic affair. As the name might suggest, Assegaaibosch Wildflower Walk is a breathtaking 4.5km experience. In addition to running and hiking, the trail offers a unique fishing experience. You might even be tempted to pop into Chaplin’s Coffee Shop for a well-deserved slice of cake.
Skirting the stunning Umhlanga coastline, Durban Promenade gives you a fairly unobstructed view of the Indian Ocean. Although it spans 8.5km, the terrain is flat, resulting in a reasonably easy run. Because of its popularity, it can get very busy, but when you experience a sunrise or a sunset along this particular coast, all other passersby virtually disappear from view.
