You can explore the entire Dog Man universe with this book hamper, consisting of three of the thirteen stories. In fact, the Dreamworks animation is but a drop in the ocean compared to what Pilkey’s words can conjure up in the pages of a book. What (or Who) is Dog Man?
Without giving too much away, the character, Dog Man, is the result of Dav Pilkey’s lively imagination. After a policeman and his faithful K9 get into an accident, the duo have to be fused together with a life-changing surgery. Evidently, a superhero is created, with man’s wisdom and empathy paired with a canine’s loyalty and strength. Dog Man strives to protect and serve his community by stopping evil plots by feline supervillain, Petey the Cat.
The Animation Adaptation
Pilkey says Dreamworks was the only choice when considering adapting his book series into a television film. Naturally, following the success of Captain Underpants, he entrusted Dreamworks with this endeavour.
The film – similar to the books – captures humour and heart. And, like in the books, Pilkey’s vibrant characters, imaginative storylines, simple drawings, lettering style and overall message remain front and centre.
In the end, Pilkey hopes his readers (and watchers) will understand that anyone can be a hero with a little bit of creativity and fearlessness.
In the animation, Pete Davidson plays the villain, Petey, whilst Peter Hastings takes on Dog Man. Furthermore, other voice actors include Lil Rey Howery, Isla Fisher, Luca Hopkins Calderon, Poppy Liu, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd and Rickey Gervais. The animation was produced by Dav Pilkey and Karen Foster and directed by Peter Hastings.
