South Africa’s cocktail culture has found its latest international ambassador. George Hunter has been crowned the country’s 2026 Diageo World Class champion and will represent Mzansi at the global finals later this year.
Hunter secured the title following a demanding national showdown at Naked Ape Distillery’s Naked Woolf venue in Rosebank. Competitors faced a series of mixology challenges designed to test creativity, technical ability and the art of creating a memorable signature serve.
Launched in 2009, Diageo World Class is both a bartending competition and an international education platform. Hunter will now compete against national champions from more than 50 countries for the title of World Class Global Bartender of the Year 2026.
For South Africa’s hospitality industry, his selection represents more than a beautifully balanced drink. It places local skill, storytelling and service in front of an international audience—and reminds the world that our bartenders know how to bring far more to the counter than ice and bravado.
“World Class is a tough competition, but you are meant to be pushed to learn and grow,” Hunter said following his win. “I am glad I rose to the occasion and won knowing I gave it my all. I am looking forward to competing on the global stage.”

Cebisa Luzipho, Culture Manager for Don Julio South, West and Central Africa at Diageo, said the competition celebrates the creativity and craftsmanship of bartenders and mixologists.
That craftsmanship matters. A great cocktail may disappear in a few thoughtful sips, but behind it sits an exacting combination of technique, hospitality, flavour and the ability to tell a story without delivering a lecture across the bar.
Keep an eye on George Hunter’s journey as he takes South African cocktail culture to the World Class global finals. Whatever the final result, earning a place among champions from more than 50 countries is already worth raising a responsible glass to.
