A first look at a garden restaurant that brings PERi-PERi chicken, local design and a monumental mosaic together
A garden setting, mountain views and South African creativity are part of the appeal at the new Nando’s Stellenbosch. Set in the historic Woodmill precinct, the restaurant has welcomed invited guests for a preview ahead of its official public opening.
The idea is to make room for more than a quick meal. Local design, an outdoor dining atmosphere and a substantial art commission give the familiar flame-grilled offering a distinctly Stellenbosch setting.
Designed and built by local teams, the restaurant draws on Stellenbosch’s architectural heritage and the Woodmill site’s industrial past. Terracotta tones, natural textures and greenery run through the space, while a central rooflight brings daylight into the interior.
The gardens and mountain views provide a backdrop for lunch with friends or a family meal. It is an easy-going setting, with carefully considered details to discover between bites.
At the entrance, Aquifer by South African artist Clive van den Berg frames views of the gardens. The mosaic stretches nine metres long and stands 3.7 metres high.
According to the supplied release, approximately 50,000 hand-cut pieces of stone, ceramic and glass went into the installation. It took more than 6,000 hours to complete, with ten artisans trained through the Spier Arts Academy working alongside the artist.
The commission reunites collaborators who worked on Coming to the City, a mosaic for Nando’s King’s Cross restaurant in London, 15 years earlier. Here, that shared craft returns to a South African setting.
The restaurant’s bottomless station brings together PERi-PERi sauces, soft serve, RUBRO iced tea and soft drinks. A full-service bar adds another option for guests dining in.
There is also a theatrical touch for customers passing through the drive-thru: a viewing window offers a glimpse into the kitchen and the flame-grilling process.
The preview celebration also introduced the limited-edition Siya Sauce, developed with Siya Kolisi. The release gives 3 November 2026 as its nationwide restaurant launch date.
Check the restaurant’s current opening information and menu through Nando’s before planning a visit.
