This AI Tool Lets You Try Wallpaper on Your Walls Before Buying It
Wallpaper Online’s free AI visualiser lets South Africans preview wallpaper on their own walls before choosing and ordering a design.
Choosing wallpaper usually involves a leap of faith. A pattern may look perfectly restrained on a laptop screen, only to become a full-scale botanical uprising once it covers the lounge.
Johannesburg-based manufacturer Wallpaper Online wants to remove some of that uncertainty with a free AI-powered Room Visualiser, allowing South Africans to preview wallpaper designs on photographs of their own rooms before ordering.
The tool operates directly through a web browser, with no app download or account registration required. Shoppers choose a wallpaper design, upload or photograph their room and receive a digital rendering of the wallpaper on their wall in less than a minute.
Users can test unlimited designs and compare different colours, patterns and finishes. It provides a considerably clearer starting point than squinting at a small sample and hoping imagination will handle the rest.
While room-visualisation tools have existed internationally for some time, Wallpaper Online describes its new offering as one of the earliest AI-powered wallpaper visualisers available within the South African market. The newer technology is designed to create more realistic previews than the flat digital mock-ups traditionally offered by visualisation platforms.
According to technology provider Roomvo, shoppers who preview products in their own spaces are three times less likely to regret their purchases.
The launch forms part of Wallpaper Online’s wider focus on locally relevant design solutions. The company has also introduced a textured peel-and-stick wallpaper range, offering linen- and woven-look finishes in a removable, paste-free format.
Its products are printed in Johannesburg using GreenGuard Gold-certified low-VOC inks. Available finishes include peel-and-stick, textured peel-and-stick, traditional paper and DuraMatte fabric.
DuraMatte was developed specifically for the lightly textured plaster walls commonly found in South African homes—because imported decorating solutions do not always understand the local terrain.
“Almost every wallpaper regret we hear about is not a product problem. It is a guessing problem."
Wallpaper Online founder, Dillon Warren
Upload a clear, front-facing photograph taken in good natural light, then compare at least three designs. Include one option outside your usual comfort zone. The visualiser may confirm your first choice, or reveal that your walls are ready for considerably more personality.
