If we really think about all the information and admin connected to our homes, we might be surprised by just how much there really is.
Our homes have become more than just the property itself.
It’s the people and pets who live there. The vehicles. The possessions. The maintenance already completed and the projects still to come.
It’s also policies, receipts, warranties, reminders, service histories and documents — the less visible layer that quietly keeps everyday life moving.
Not Until You Need It
We don’t usually think about the exact paint colour we used until we need to repaint a wall. Or which plumber installed the geyser and told us there was a warranty. Or those home renovations or improvements that might need supporting evidence for Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
Then there are the more important things: an inventory of household items for insurance purposes, the expiry date of a vehicle licence, the details of a funeral policy for a family member we care for — even where the last will and testament is kept. We usually put important documents somewhere safe and, years later, can’t remember where that safe place was. The list goes on.
We tend to think we should have known, or should have been more organised, but usually only after something happens.
In most households, there is one person who knows most of it. They know who to call, where things are kept, what was repaired, when something expires and which company holds which policy.
Until, for whatever reason, they aren’t available to assist — often leaving other family members to face a situation that is more difficult than it needs to be.
Sometimes life simply gets busy, and important things slip or get missed — and we don’t realise that until we need them, sometimes only after something unexpected happens.
When Information Really Matters
Consider funeral policies and unclaimed insurance benefits for a moment.
No one particularly wants to think about what might happen, and we always hope that information will never be needed. Yet according to the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA), there were nearly 17 million individual recurring-premium funeral policies in force at the end of June 2025.
Back in 2018 already, FNB Life reported identifying more than R160 million worth of unclaimed policies on its books, funeral cover among them.
There could be many reasons why insurance benefits go unclaimed. But there is also a very human question worth considering: do the people left behind know that a policy exists, who it is with or where to find the information they need? Having a policy and knowing how to access its benefits, however, are two different things.
The scale of the problem reaches far beyond any single insurer. In its 2026 Budget, National Treasury highlighted more than R88 billion in unclaimed financial assets and benefits across South Africa — including retirement benefits, dormant bank accounts, investments and insurance payouts. In August 2026, it published proposals for a centralised system to improve the tracing of owners and beneficiaries, so more of that money reaches the people entitled to it.
That’s an extreme example, but the everyday version of this problem plays out constantly, in smaller and quieter ways.
The Information Behind Every Home
We spend a great deal of time thinking about what goes into our homes — our furniture, technology, renovations, décor and security. However, far less attention is given to the information connected to them. That information accumulates over time and forms something of an operating history of our homes. And that history can carry real value.

Being organised isn’t just about being neat and tidy. Some of us colour-code our closets; others live with the towel permanently on the floor.
