Spring has arrived, which means fewer excuses to stay indoors. This October, Bedford Centre and Planet Fitness are taking the morning workout outside—and several storeys up.
The free Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover takes place on Saturday, 3 October 2026. For one morning, the shopping centre’s open-air parking deck will become an energetic outdoor fitness space filled with movement, music and community spirit.
Registration opens at 07:30, with the first session beginning at 08:00. The event will be held on the open parking deck between Entrances 1 and 2.
First, participants will ease into the morning with yoga. Then, Planet Fitness will raise the tempo with its fast-paced PF20 workout. Finally, a hybrid dance session will finish the morning on a high.
Importantly, you don’t need to be a Planet Fitness member to join. You also don’t need to be especially fit. The sessions are open to all fitness levels, from committed gym-goers to anyone keen to try something different.
Yes, there may be a few stiff muscles afterwards. However, the fresh air, music and Joburg skyline should help soften the blow.
The morning comes with a little extra motivation. Bedford Centre stores have contributed prizes worth a combined R20,000. In addition, every participant will receive a goodie bag containing discount vouchers from participating retailers.
However, the event is about more than working up a sweat.
Attendees are encouraged to bring pre-loved gym shoes and fitness clothing. These items will be collected and donated to people in need, giving unused activewear a worthwhile second life.
“Spring is such a great time to get outdoors and get moving,” says Linda Linnow, General Manager of Bedford Centre. “You don’t have to be incredibly fit or belong to a gym. Come along, try a class, have some fun and, if you can, bring something to donate too.”
The Bedford Rooftop Fitness Takeover is free, but space is limited. Therefore, advance booking is essential.
Booking information will be available through Bedford Centre’s website, @bedfordcentre on social media, the centre management office and the information desk.
Gather a few friends, pack a water bottle and bring along any activewear you no longer use. It is free, beginner-friendly and supports a good cause—which is considerably more productive than spending Saturday morning on the couch.
