The Great Safari Family Adventure
The South African safari is one of the few holidays that still manages to surprise people. Not because the animals have changed. Lions remain lions.
In a move set to delight food lovers across Pretoria, The Pantry has officially opened its doors in the vibrant Hazelwood precinct. The stylish new spot marks a major milestone for Pantry by Marble, the gourmet convenience concept that has quickly become a favourite with Johannesburg diners and shoppers alike.
Founded by the acclaimed team behind Marble Hospitality Group – including chef David Higgs and restaurateur Gary Kyriacou – Pantry began life as a high-end deli and grocery store on Jan Smuts Avenue in Rosebank. What started as a clever pandemic pivot has since evolved into a destination that blends artisan retail, freshly prepared meals and elevated takeaway favourites.
Unlike the Rosebank location, which operates as a forecourt store open 24/7, the new Hazelwood branch is the brand’s first standalone store, embracing a more expansive, experiential format in Pretoria’s Old East Precinct. After the success of this store, they’ve gone on to open another branch in Bassonia in Johannesburg South.
Inside, visitors will find an impressive selection of fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, premium meats and baked goods, alongside ready-to-eat favourites like wood-fired pizzas, juicy burgers, gourmet sandwiches, seasonal salads and comforting classics. Pantry’s much-loved soft-serve ice cream and specialty coffee bar also make a return – perfect for a quick stop or a slow weekend indulgence.
The Hazelwood store introduces a bespoke butchery counter, expanded bakery offerings and a dedicated lifestyle and gifting corner. These additions elevate Pantry beyond a traditional deli and restaurant into something far more layered: a place to shop, eat and gather.

Designed with warmth and modern sophistication, the interiors encourage guests to linger just a little bit longer, whether browsing pantry staples, picking up dinner ingredients or meeting friends for a casual catch-up over a freshly made meal.
Their latest offerings turn a culinary hotspot into a gourmet destination. Their Donut Wednesday is a monthly event where a unique doughnut hits the stores. Another lifestyle event is their Cook-Along class, held with David Higgs. This happens quarterly and spaces sell out fast.
Its location, just minutes from the University of Pretoria and surrounded by other cafés and boutique retailers, positions Pantry as a natural extension of Hazelwood’s creative, food-forward community.
With this launch, Pantry’s evolution from a petrol-station deli to a standalone lifestyle destination shows all the signs of being a culinary masterpiece – and Hazelwood’s culinary landscape has gained a delicious new anchor.
