Africa's highest rooftop bar is officially open
Joburg’s skyline just got a whole lot better with the recent opening of what has to be the coolest bar in the city (if not on the continent).
Allow us to welcome you to Alto234 Bar (Alto means height in Latin and 234 is the hight of the bar in meters). It is the highest urban bar in Africa and hands down the most spectacular bar in Jozi. It cannot be beaten, from bar tapas to bubbles to 360 degree views, and that’s just a fact. The views will take your breath away and the clinking chime of glasses toasting envelopes all senses.
Simply put, its the kind of place that dreams are made of… It almost feels like a guilty pleasure, as if you’re cheating on Jozi, it feels otherworldly but interestingly not overly pretentious either. It has just the right amount of sass and sophistication.
We absolutely love the concept of the design, the bar is designed on the rooftop with the most glorious sunset views indeed but you’ll soon notice it is designed to be exclusive. Instead of a communal ambience there are glass pods, which have been designed as drinking hubs, where you can sit and stay close to your tribe. Not sure if this is with Covid in mind but it surely lends itself to the current environment.
Oh and if you’re afraid of heights rather don’t go, this space makes Nelson Mandela Square look like a blip in the cosmos.
In celebration of the opening, Moët & Chandon, gifted Alto234 with a special edition package. Delivered up to the 57th floor in grand champagne style via
helicopter of course, what was inside the box?
Only a limited edition Moët Mini Machine which offers guests the opportunity to experience French savoir-faire at its finest. Using Moët money (tokens), guests can order Moët Mini 200ml bottles with golden sippers, right out of the machine at perfect temperature (at around R325per bottle). We’re just disappointed we don’t have one in our living room.
The tapas bar and food offering will be headed up by the award-winning AURUM Restaurant just a few levels below. The wine list conveys the best on offer from around the world as well as familiar favourites from the Cape Winelands.
