Culture Newlands Pours a New Kind of Neighbourhood Local

Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs have a new place to settle in over a good glass of wine, punchy small plates and the pleasant possibility of bumping into someone you know

Every neighbourhood needs a reliable local: somewhere polished enough for a celebration but relaxed enough for an unplanned glass after work. Culture Newlands has opened on Kildare Road with precisely that ambition.

The new wine bar joins chef Matt Manning’s Cape Town hospitality collection, which includes Culture Wine Bar on Bree Street, Grub & Vine, The Blue Room and the Chef’s Studio. Yet this is no suburban copy-and-paste job.

Culture Newlands Finds its Own Rhythm

Created by Matt and Roxanne Manning, Culture Newlands takes its cues from the intimate neighbourhood wine bars the couple discovered while travelling. The result is designed around repeat visits rather than rare occasions: a quick midweek drink, a Mimosa-fuelled brunch or an evening gathered around the bar with friends.

The interiors by Stokperd carry over Culture’s signature burnt orange, softened here by sage green. Vintage finds—including a classical bust, gramophone and antique ten-pin bowling set—bring a little eccentricity, while an intimate cheese room offers a glimpse into the venue’s on-site Fromagerie.

Then there is the deck: a sunlit perch overlooking Newlands Village and its busy traffic circle. It is less hushed hideaway and more front-row seat to neighbourhood life.

“We wanted to create the kind of place that becomes part of people’s weekly routine."

More Than 50 Wines by The Glass

Wine remains the main event, with group sommelier Luyolo Mtiyane leading the programme. Before compiling the list, the Culture team asked local residents what they wanted to drink. Their requests included strong by-the-glass options, sparkling wine, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.

The resulting selection brings South African producers together with carefully chosen international bottles, offering more than 50 wines by the glass. That breadth should make experimentation easier—and remove the need for an entire table to agree on one bottle.

Food follows the same unfussy spirit. Matt, together with chefs Aaron Subroyal and Givemore Dausi, has created a menu of cheeses from the Fromagerie, Richard Bosman charcuterie, pintxos and tapas.

Wine tastings, producer evenings and neighbourhood events are also planned, while a membership programme offers regular guests benefits including preferential pricing and priority access to selected experiences.

Come for the deck, stay for the cheese room and use that generous by-the-glass list to order something unfamiliar. Culture Newlands appears to understand that a successful neighbourhood bar is not simply located in a community—it earns a place in its weekly rhythm.
