#HelloRecommends: Nuances of Japan and Peru at Nikkei Restaurant in Bree Street
Updated 25 May 2026: In a bustling Bree Street, Nikkei Restaurant stands proud, tempting bypassers to take the staircase that leads up to a moody
There’s something exciting happening in Cape Town’s dining scene right now. Hidden just below Nikkei on Bree Street, Yatai Ramenbar is was becoming one of the cities leading Japanese Restaurants. Entering via the back alley feels like stepping through a secret doorway into Tokyo after dark.
The moment guests walk inside, the city noise fades away. In its place? A moody Japanese-inspired food destination filled with glowing pink cherry blossoms, dark wood finishes and the kind of atmosphere that immediately says: “Tonight is going to be fun.” Check out our Cape Town City Guide for more fun things to do in the city at night.
Inspired by Japan’s traditional Yatai street stalls, the restaurant takes the energy of late-night street food culture and gives it a polished Cape Town twist. However, this isn’t one of those overly serious fine dining spaces where everyone whispers over tiny portions. Yatai keeps things playful, loud and packed with personality.
Guests can grab a seat at the buzzing open kitchen, settle into plush booth seating or park themselves at the cocktail bar where the drinks flow almost as quickly as the conversations. Meanwhile, the soundtrack pumps in the background, hinting at the venue’s late-night transformation after 22:00.
Led by chefs Rikku O’Donnchu and Warwick King, previously from Exhibit A and Ex Gate, the menu takes ramen seriously. Very seriously.
The evening kicked off with a playful Miso Soup Bomb paired with Chawanmushi and edible flowers. Small in size, huge in flavour. Then came beautifully plated Red Roman Sashimi with pickled guava, Asam Dashi and Mizuna Oil that immediately set the tone for the night.
Next up were duck confit Gyoza Dumplings coated in sticky miso, honey and ginger. Rich, sweet, spicy and dangerously moreish. Soon after, the Robata-grilled Chicken Tsukune arrived glazed in sweet soy and paired with tare sauce and confit egg yolk. Smoky, sticky and impossible not to talk about.
Then came the real headline act.

he Truffle Shoyu Wagyu Ramen arrived looking almost too good to eat. Almost.
The broth was rich and creamy thanks to Yatai’s kotteri-style approach, while slices of Wagyu beef, scallion oil, marinated egg and crisp red cabbage slaw created layer after layer of flavour. Even the noodles deserve their own applause. They’re traditionally stretched using an authentic Japanese noodle stretcher, giving them that signature bite ramen fans obsess over.
For anyone searching for exciting Japanese dining in Cape Town, this place quickly earns a spot near the top of the list.
Just when diners think the experience is winding down, Yatai shifts gears.
From Thursday to Saturday after 22:00, the restaurant transforms into a Japanese-inspired Nomikai drinking gathering complete with live DJs, cocktails and late-night energy. Selected Japanese cocktails and sake carafes are also discounted by 50%, which explains why the venue starts filling up fast later in the evening.
The drinks menu deserves attention too. The Nigai Awe — a refreshing non-alcoholic mix of matcha, lime and grapefruit soda – stood out as one of the evening’s highlights.
Dessert, meanwhile, ended the night on a high note. The Matcha Tiramisu with tonka bean sponge, mascarpone and matcha ice cream felt playful yet indulgent. Exactly the kind of finale this experience needed.
Yatai doesn’t stop at noodles.

Cape Town certainly isn’t short on trendy restaurants. Still, Yatai Ramenbar feels different. It’s immersive, energetic and just theatrical enough to keep diners talking about it long after the final cocktail arrives.
Whether guests are ramen fanatics or simply looking for a new night out with personality, Yatai creates the kind of dining experience that turns a casual dinner into a full evening adventure.
