Ester Ochse From FNB Shares 10 Money Watchpoints For South Africans
South Africans may joke that the Budget Speech is background noise – until someone mentions fuel levies. Then, suddenly, everyone listens. And rightfully so. The
Cape Town’s Bree Street restaurant scene has long been one of the Mother City’s most vibrant culinary corridors – its bustling strip dotted with cafes, wine bars and international eateries drawing locals and visitors alike. Tucked into this gastronomic hotspot is a fresh neighbourhood star: The Whip Club Gourmet Sandwich Destination on Bree Street Cape Town and their coffee hatch at 61 Bree Street, brought to life by the team behind The Wiggle Room.
Unlike its sibling’s fine-dining experience – which is known for its multi-course chef’s counter dinners – The Whip Club opens its doors from noon to serve creative, flavourful sandwiches and excellent coffee in a casual, stylish setting. It’s a concept that fits perfectly into the busy rhythm of Bree Street, offering something beyond the standard grab-and-go lunch culture.
The Whip Club is a space of urban chic and relaxed comfort. Located inside a section of the showroom floor – a nod to the “wiggle” in The Wiggle Room’s name – its aesthetic pairs modern minimalism with a welcoming vibe.
As you round the corner to 61 Bree Street, you’ll see a thoughtfully designated parklet, perfect for al fresco dining on sunny Cape Town days. Alongside this will be supercars parallel-parked for you to gaze upon during your visit.
Indoors is where the open-hatch style encourages a quick order and a leisurely meal alike. It’s where the “play” comes to life in the WiggleVerse, with a giant state-of-the-art golf simulator and a Ferrari parked haphazardly in the middle of the room.
The multiple walls of The Whip Club Gourmet Sandwich Destination on Bree Street Cape Town don local art from Cape Town’s most well-known creatives, like Chris MacLemons, Mambakwedza and Danie Marais. They breathe life into The Whip Club, turning it into an artistic hub.
It’s clear from the moment you look at the menu that this isn’t your average sandwich stop. Dubbed The Magnificent Seven, the sandwich lineup gives each creation a distinct personality, embracing bold ingredients and playful names that nod to equestrian themes – a homage to The Whip Club’s original inspiration. The menu was developed by executive chef Ismail Amos, affectionately known as Chef Fish.
Highlights include The Saucy Mare – a wagyu tongue sandwich layered with Asian slaw, mint-apple salsa and hot English mustard mayo – and The Prancer, featuring ham, creamy burrata and XO Heart tomato and cashew pesto. These are not mere lunchtime staples, but thoughtfully crafted flavour encounters.
We chose three sandwiches for sharing. First, the The Coquette: a peri-peri chicken sandwich with Shatta mayonnaise, baby spinach and smoked feta. Next, The Sporting Beau, filled with pulled lamb, cheddar cheese, parslet, chimichurri and rocket salad. Lastly, The Honey Trap, a creation of smoked brisket, honey-mustard mayonnaise, wild garlic and rocket.
Of course, no artisan sandwich experience is complete without an excellent coffee and cocktail selection, and The Whip Club Gourmet Sandwich Destination on Bree Street Cape Town delivers just that. Barista Thabiso is on hand to pour smooth espresso shots and prepare a range of coffee styles. He’s also well versed in matcha and specialty brews for those seeking a caffeine alternative.
For those wanting a pick me up, The Whip Club’s resident sommelier and mixologist, Lester Riffel, will advise and steer you around his collection of the most obscure Western Cape cultivars and creations.
These are the kind of beverages that feel tailor-made to pair with the robust sandwich flavours on offer, making this a top pick for both brunch meetings and midday breaks.
What makes The Whip Club especially noteworthy is how it elevates the simple sandwich to something exciting without sacrificing approachability. Each bite feels deliberately conceived and satisfying, yet the overall experience remains informal – the perfect midday retreat from the bustling urban pace.
