InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town Unveils Its R1 Billion Transformation
Discover the R1 billion transformation of InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town, from its 306 rooms and new spa to four dining destinations.
Some hotels simply provide a room. Others become part of a city’s identity. Since Nelson Mandela officially opened the original Table Bay Hotel in 1997, this harbourside landmark has belonged firmly in the second category.
Now operating as InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town, the hotel officially celebrated its grand opening on 5 August 2026 following an 18-month redevelopment valued at more than R1 billion.
The property welcomed guests earlier in 2026 as Cape Town’s first InterContinental hotel, bringing one of the city’s most recognisable addresses into IHG Hotels & Resorts’ international luxury portfolio.
The redevelopment respects the hotel’s familiar architecture while introducing interiors inspired by the meeting of ocean, mountain and city.
Its room count has been reduced from 329 to 306, creating more generous accommodation and increasing the number of suites from 18 to 40. Rooms maximise natural light and showcase views across Table Mountain, Table Bay, Robben Island and the working harbour.
Club InterContinental introduces a private lounge and personalised services, while further additions include SPA InterContinental, a new fitness studio, upgraded event facilities and an elevated pool terrace.
In August 2026, the hotel also became South Africa’s first hotel to receive a 5-Star Green Star Design rating under the Green Building Council South Africa’s new Version 2 tool—adding environmental performance to the transformation story.

The hotel’s dining collection gives Cape Town residents a reason to visit without booking a room.
Flint & Fennel serves seasonal, all-day dining and a Cape-inspired afternoon tea. Le Bistrot de JAN brings Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s French bistro concept home to South Africa, with Executive Chef Giles Edwards leading the kitchen.
The Botanist’s Table draws inspiration from the Cape’s floral heritage for its cocktails and sharing plates, while Solandra pairs wood-fired pizzas, gelato and relaxed poolside drinks with views towards Granger Bay.
Sun International continues to operate the hotel on behalf of the V&A Waterfront, while guests now gain access to IHG One Rewards and its wider international hotel network.

Begin with afternoon tea or cocktails to experience the new hotel without committing to an overnight stay. For the full indulgence, book a waterfront room and rediscover a Cape Town landmark that has changed its wardrobe without forgetting its history.
