Ethical, earth-friendly products are what owner, Haseena set out to include in her uMhlanga Ridge store and she’s stayed true to her vision. When she began Wanderlust Collectables, it was off the back of her own travels and her quest to find beautiful and unusual things from around the world. “In a sense, it stemmed from a personal philosophy that creativity and the quest for beauty have no borders despite what maps and stereotypes would have us believe,” she says. Her most recent trip was to India and for textiles, India is hard to beat. “Their boldness in terms of colour and technique leaves me awestruck every single time,” she says. “I travelled to villages in West Bengal to meet the artisans who make the most exquisite and unusual silk scarves for the shop, and to Kashmir to meet the weavers who make our pashminas. The products are the thread that connect our customers with the makers who put heart and soul into what they do.”
From unique jackets (only one of each ever made) and Turkish towels, to exquisite little handbags and pure cotton kimonos, this is a treasure trove of exceptional work. It’s also the perfect space to shop in for special gifts for yourself or others. Haseena says: “I have nurtured and loved [Wanderlust Collectables] and in return it has been a safe and joyful space for me and so many others.”
Whether you’re a collector, lover of old quirky things, or want to find that solid silver picture frame as a gift, you’ll love the antique fairs held at Windermere Centre, as well as the Fields Hill Shopping Centre in Kloof. Dealers set up their tables with a glorious array of antiques and collectables, including silver, linen, books, records, DVDs, porcelain, beautiful Murano glass, jewellery and so much more.
The Windermere Antique Fair is held on the lower level of the Windermere Centre on the first Saturday of every month. The (new) Kloof Antique Fair is held on the last Saturday of every month.
Tracy and Billy Harker have chosen to fight boredom one pair at a time as the payoff line for their Funky Pants and they’ve been hugely successful. Funky Pants is run out of their (large) garage in Durban North and you’ll find their stretchy, uber comfy, spandex Lycra shorts in sizes from babies to grannies. They describe the sizes as: “Classic shorts for running, paddling, walking and, well, anything else in between; three quarter length pants and full length.” Most have the high waist option (the girls love those) or standard and the pants are all unisex. They also make costumes and jammers (a Speedo with legs) for swimming, and they’ll happily customise designs for your club or school.
Tracy says that Funky Pants are quick-dry, stop you from chafing and don’t ride up. Kids apparently rage in them and literally wear them ’til they’re holey. You’re bound to braai in them, swim in them and then go home in them.
Funky Pants has the biggest, widest range of colours and designs – sedate to sexy to scream-out-loud. Everything about it is local – the designs, the fabric, the manufacture and the sales. Even the photoshoots feature the Harker kids and other fans.

The Victoria Street Market is the oldest market in Durban and it was built on the site of the 1910 Indian Market, which means there is a lot of history attached to it. The market offers more than 200 stalls to stroll past, with the building housing a wonderful blend of India and Africa.
