A New Gourmet Sandwich Destination on Bree: The Whip Club
Cape Town’s Bree Street restaurant scene has long been one of the Mother City’s most vibrant culinary corridors – its bustling strip dotted with cafes,
What happens when one of South Africa’s most recognisable fashion designers turns his attention to wine? The result is Wine Couture, a limited-edition collection from Gert-Johan Coetzee that merges the worlds of design and winemaking in a surprisingly elegant way.
We recently received the debut Wine Couture collector’s box – and from the moment you open it, this feels less like a standard wine delivery and more like a keepsake. Only 100 collector’s boxes exist, each containing six bottles (two of each wine). For collectors and wine lovers alike, that level of rarity immediately makes this a conversation piece.
But of course, the real question is: how do the wines taste, and is it true that you can now drink fashion?
To bring the concept to life, Coetzee collaborated with boutique winemaker Albert Ahrens of Ahrens Family Wines. The partnership blends couture-level attention to detail with a minimal-intervention approach to winemaking.
Instead of chasing bold, overpowering flavours, the trio of wines leans into restraint and nuance. The theme running through the collection is inspired by African light and the symbolism of the elephant – wisdom, strengthand quiet power. That narrative unfolds across three wines that mirror the rhythm of a day: morning, dusk and sunset.
The white wine in the collection, Ivory Sands, is crisp and refreshing without being overly sharp. It opens with clean citrus notes and a soft mineral finish that makes it easy to drink on a warm afternoon.
There’s a calm elegance to it – nothing flashy, just balanced acidity and a gentle complexity that builds as the wine settles in the glass. If you enjoy whites that feel refined rather than overly fruity, this one will likely beyour favourite.
We opened Ivory Sands with tuna mayo canapés on crisp crostini, and the pairing worked beautifully. The wine’s clean acidity cut through the richness of the tuna and mayonnaise, while its citrus notes lifted the flavours of the fish.
The result? A light, elegant start to the tasting. Each sip refreshed the palate and made the next bite feel just as bright as the first.
Also pair it with:
The rosé, Blush at Dusk, sits firmly in the dry rosé category, with a delicate salinity that adds character. It’s luminous in the glass and incredibly drinkable.
What stood out most during our tasting was how structured yet light it feels. Subtle berry notes appear first, followed by a clean finish that makes you immediately want another sip.
This is the kind of wine you open when friends drop by and conversation stretches late into the evening.
For Blush at Dusk, we leaned into its social, easy-drinking character and served it alongside a spread of Mediterranean tapas and small plates. Think marinated olives, grilled halloumi, hummus, and warm pita.
The dry rosé’s delicate fruit and subtle salinity worked especially well with the saltiness of the olives and the creamy texture of the hummus. It’s the kind of wine that thrives on variety – small bites, shared plates and long conversations around the table.
Also pair it with:
The red wine of the trio, Crimson Ridge, might be the most intriguing of the collection. It’s lighter in body than many South African reds but still carries depth and structure.
Expect soft red fruit, gentle spice and a lingering finish that develops slowly. It feels composed and thoughtful rather than heavy — a red wine designed for sipping and reflecting.
This one lingers long after the last sip.
The final wine, Crimson Ridge, was served with a traditional roast dinner, and it proved to be a natural match. The wine’s lighter body and layered red fruit complemented the richness of the roast without overpowering it.
With roasted vegetables and gravy on the plate, the wine softened further, revealing gentle spice and a lingering finish that made the meal feel relaxed and comforting.
Also pair it with:
Wine Couture is intentionally rare. Each release will appear in extremely limited quantities, and no edition will be repeated. Future seasonal editions will tell different South African stories through design, symbolism and wine.
For collectors, that alone makes this debut set particularly appealing.
But even without the exclusivity, the wines themselves stand comfortably on their own. They are restrained, elegant and thoughtful – a refreshing change from wines that try too hard to impress.
If you enjoy limited-edition South African wines, this collection is worth seeking out. The storytelling, packaging and rarity add an element of theatre, while the wines themselves remain balanced and approachable.
More importantly, it’s an interesting reminder that creativity can cross industries. In this case, a fashion designer and a winemaker have created something that sits somewhere between art object and wine collection.
This is wine you wear like silk. This is fashion you taste. This is South Africa designed and expressed in every pour. And honestly, opening the box really does feel a little like unwrapping a piece of couture.
