Gold City Rollers

Joburg has never needed a hefty entertainment budget to show you a good time. Beneath the traffic, glass towers and persistent urban hurry is a city filled with green spaces, wildlife encounters, history and wonderfully unconventional communities.

Whether you are entertaining the kids, planning an affordable date or simply looking for a reason to leave the house, these five Joburg experiences deliver change from R300 per person.

1. Find Some Breathing Room at Liberty Indwe Park

Wedged between Wits University, Jan Smuts Avenue and Liberty’s Braamfontein headquarters, Liberty Indwe Park is a welcome green lung in the concrete city.

The park was designed by architect Edmund Batley with input from artist James Delaney, whose remarkable work helped transform The Wilds into one of Joburg’s most inspiring public spaces. Here, pathways wind between indigenous Highveld trees, landscaping and public artworks, creating room to walk, pause and briefly forget about the traffic beyond the boundary.

Best of all, entrance is free. Pack a coffee, take an unhurried stroll and give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing for a while.

Cost: Free.

2. Meet the Locals at Montecasino Bird Gardens

Behind Montecasino’s larger-than-life Tuscan façade lies one of Fourways’ most surprising family attractions. Montecasino Bird Gardens is home to more than 60 bird species in its walk-through aviary, alongside reptiles, small mammals, frogs and invertebrates.

Scarlet ibises provide the colour, lemurs bring the personality and the cycad garden slows the entire experience down. It is compact enough for younger children but interesting enough to keep adults from staring at their phones for the afternoon.

Cost: General admission is below R300 per person; discounted tariffs may be available to Tsogo Rewards members.

3. Get Your Skates On With Golden City Rollers

There is sport, and then there is roller derby: fast, physical and filled with enough theatrical swagger to make an ordinary Saturday feel like an underground sporting festival.

Joburg’s Golden City Rollers introduces newcomers to this gloriously unconventional world through bouts, social events and beginner-friendly opportunities. You do not need to understand every rule before attending. Half the pleasure lies in watching the speed, strategy and organised chaos unfold.

Event dates, venues and admission vary, so check the latest listing before arriving.

Cost: Many events and introductory sessions fall below R300.

4. Walk Through South Africa’s Story at Constitution Hill

A former prison complex and the present home of the Constitutional Court, Constitution Hill is not a place one simply “ticks off”. Its cells, courtyards and exhibitions reveal difficult stories of injustice, resistance and the democratic ideals that followed.

The one-hour Highlights Tour provides an accessible introduction, while the two-hour Full Tour allows more time to understand the Old Fort, Number Four and Women’s Jail.

Cost: Highlights Tour: R150 per adult; R90 for children, pensioners and students. Full Tour: R200 per adult.

5. Spend the Day at Johannesburg Zoo

Covering a sizeable stretch of leafy Saxonwold, Johannesburg Zoo offers far more than a quick lap past the animal enclosures.

The grounds invite a full day of walking, learning and picnic stops, while conservation-focused exhibits introduce visitors to animals from South Africa and further afield. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and resist trying to conquer the entire zoo at military pace.

Cost: R135 per adult; R81 for children and senior citizens.

Begin with Liberty Indwe Park for a free morning escape and save your budget for one of the city’s deeper experiences. Constitution Hill is our pick for visitors wanting to understand Joburg rather than merely photograph it.
