GWM ORA 5 Launches in South Africa with Petrol, Hybrid and Electric Options
The new GWM ORA 5 arrives in South Africa with petrol, hybrid and electric models, giving compact SUV buyers more choice than ever before.
Buying a compact SUV has become surprisingly complicated. Every manufacturer seems convinced they know what’s best for you. Some point you towards petrol, others insist hybrid is the future, while a growing number believe it’s time to go fully electric. GWM has taken a different approach with the new ORA 5 by simply letting buyers decide.
Now available in South Africa, the all-new GWM ORA 5 is offered with three powertrain options: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, a hybrid and a fully electric model. It’s one of the few vehicles in its class to give motorists that level of flexibility without changing the vehicle itself.
That feels particularly relevant in South Africa. One family might spend weekdays navigating Joburg traffic before heading for the bush or the coast on weekends. Another may be ready for electric driving, while their neighbour still wants the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer road trips.

The ORA 5 retains the rounded styling that made the ORA name familiar, but adopts a more practical SUV shape. Inside, GWM introduces its latest Coffee OS infotainment system with dual digital displays, smartphone connectivity and voice control, while a full suite of active safety technologies and six airbags come standard across the range.
Pricing starts at R364,900 for the turbo-petrol model and extends to R599,900 for the flagship battery-electric version. Every model includes a seven-year/200,000km warranty, a seven-year service plan and roadside assistance.
The ORA 5 isn’t trying to convince South Africans that one technology suits everyone. Instead, it acknowledges that every driver’s journey towards electrification looks different. In a market where choice often feels limited, that may prove to be its biggest advantage.
