The New Renault Duster Turns the Cape Town–Hermanus Road Trip Into an Adventure

An SUV that has grown considerably more sophisticated without losing its appetite for adventure

White Renault Duster Cape Town Review

We drove the new-generation Renault Duster from Cape Town International Airport to Hermanus, discovering an SUV that has grown considerably more sophisticated without losing its appetite for adventure.

Some vehicles make the most sense beneath showroom lights. The new Renault Duster needs a road, preferably one that escapes the city, slips between the mountains and eventually finds the sea.

That was the thinking behind Renault South Africa’s launch route from Cape Town International Airport to Hermanus. With Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate providing a scenic pause along the way and The Marine Hotel waiting for us at the finish line, the drive offered a fitting introduction to a Duster that feels ready for both the weekday commute and the weekend disappearing act.

A Duster With More Road Presence

The Duster has never been interested in looking delicate. This new generation retains that rugged character but replaces some of the old rough edges with a more confident, contemporary design.

Its sculpted bonnet meets a distinctive front grille carrying the DUSTER nameplate, while robust skid plates and up to 18-inch alloy wheels reinforce its SUV credentials. Around the back, a horizontal LED light bar incorporates the lighting elements into one clean signature.

The result is recognisably Duster—only sharper, broader in ambition and far less utilitarian than its predecessors.

From Cape Town to the Overberg

Leaving the airport gave us an opportunity to experience the Duster in the sort of environment many owners will encounter daily: busy roads, changing traffic and the general unpredictability of getting anywhere in Cape Town.

As the city gave way to the open road, the Duster settled comfortably into its role as a touring SUV. The available 116kW 1.3-litre turbocharged engine provides the performance needed for overtaking and longer journeys, while selected derivatives pair it with a six-speed EDC automatic transmission, paddle shifters and an electronic gear selector.

A stop at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate brought vineyards, fynbos and the waters of Walker Bay into the story. It was also the kind of setting that suits the Duster’s personality: polished enough for the wine estate, but perfectly happy should the road there become less cooperative.

Our final destination was The Marine Hotel, perched above Hermanus’ famous cliff path. Lunch overlooking Walker Bay offered a suitably civilised conclusion to a drive designed to demonstrate that adventure does not always require roof tents, recovery tracks and three days of dehydrated food.

Sometimes it simply requires leaving the airport and taking the longer road to lunch.

A Cabin Built Around Real Life

The transformation is most noticeable inside. The cabin is more driver-focused and can be personalised through different display, lighting, steering and driving-mode settings. The available Multi-Sense system offers Eco, Comfort and Perso modes, while higher-specification models introduce up to 48 ambient-lighting colours.

A 10.1-inch OpenR Link infotainment display provides wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, accompanied by a digital driver display on selected models. The wireless charging pad is particularly clever, incorporating cooling to help manage phone temperature while charging—useful when navigation, Bluetooth and the Western Cape sun are all working against your battery.

In the flagship Iconic model, a PM2.5 filter and air-quality display monitor cabin air and filter airborne pollution. It is not the feature most people expect to discuss at a vehicle launch, but it may become one they appreciate every day.

Ventilated and electrically adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof and powered tailgate are also available further up the range. Boot capacity extends from 518 litres below the parcel shelf to 1,789 litres with the rear seats folded, providing ample room for family holidays, outdoor equipment or an ambitious wine-farm haul.

Technology Without Forgetting the Road

The new Duster offers 212mm of ground clearance and a suspension setup developed for comfort and durability across varying road surfaces. While our journey was more Overberg escape than off-road expedition, the raised driving position and composed ride support its promise of everyday versatility.

Safety has also taken a meaningful step forward. Six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, tyre-pressure monitoring and a reversing camera are standard across the range. Higher derivatives offer up to 17 driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, lane-keep assistance, active emergency braking and a 360-degree camera.

The new Duster’s greatest achievement is not a screen, light bar or increasingly long list of driver aids. It is the way Renault has added sophistication without polishing away the vehicle’s character.

For young families, urban explorers and South Africans who want one vehicle to manage school runs, road trips and occasional dirt-road detours, the Duster presents a compelling package. The Techno 1.3 Turbo EDC may prove the range’s sweet spot, while the Iconic is aimed at buyers who want their adventure with considerably more comfort.
