There are two kinds of people on a Saturday morning. Those wandering around a shopping centre looking for coffee and those voluntarily pushing sleds, rowing against invisible rivers and questioning every life decision somewhere around the wall-ball station.
On Saturday 4 July, both groups will find themselves in the same place when Planet Fitness and Discovery Vitality bring the Hybrid Games Simulation Saturday back to Cavendish Square in Cape Town.
From 09h00 to 13h00, the P3 parking area will trade cars for competition as athletes, gym enthusiasts and curious spectators gather for a morning built around sweat, endurance and plenty of crowd energy. Think less shopping-centre parking lot and more race-day atmosphere, complete with music, cheering supporters and competitors chasing places in the Hybrid Games finals later this year.
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to appreciate the atmosphere. In fact, events like these have become increasingly popular because they combine fitness with the sort of community spirit usually reserved for road races and rugby matches.
DJ BamBam will provide the soundtrack throughout the morning, while Discovery Vitality and USN activations will keep spectators entertained with samples, giveaways and plenty happening between heats.
Even those arriving for a quick Saturday shopping trip may find themselves lingering a little longer. There is something strangely fascinating about watching people willingly run themselves into exhaustion while complete strangers cheer them on. South Africans have always enjoyed supporting a challenge, particularly when grit and determination are involved.
Competitors will tackle six stations over a 23-minute challenge. The sequence includes running, SkiErg, walking lunges with a sandbag, rowing and wall balls, with athletes working flat out for two minutes before earning a brief one-minute recovery.
The format rewards more than brute strength. Endurance, pacing and mental toughness all come into play, and it’s often the final few minutes that separate those chasing qualification from those simply happy to cross the finish line.
Top-performing men and women across various age categories will earn places at the Hybrid Games finals scheduled for November.
One of the reasons we like the Hybrid Games is that they don’t belong exclusively to elite athletes with sponsorship deals and impossibly low body-fat percentages. Anyone between the ages of 16 and 70 can enter, regardless of whether they’re a Planet Fitness member or simply someone curious enough to see what they’re capable of.
Perhaps that’s the real appeal. Fitness isn’t always about chasing personal bests or collecting Strava kudos. Sometimes it’s about saying yes to something difficult and discovering that the voice telling you to stop is often far less convincing than you thought.
If you’re feeling brave, Hybrid Games Simulation Saturday takes place on Saturday 4 July from 09h00 to 13h00 in the P3 parking area at Cavendish Square in Cape Town. Entry costs R150 for Planet Fitness and Elevate members and R200 for Discovery Vitality members and non-members. Registration is essential and there will be no entries on the day.
Because every now and then, a shopping-centre parking lot becomes a race track, complete strangers cheer each other on, and people leave with something far more valuable than a medal. They leave with a story.
