South Africa’s arts scene is no stranger to bold storytelling, but every now and then, something comes along that shifts the conversation entirely. This April, Unmute Dance Theatre is doing exactly that – taking its powerful, inclusive performances from local stages to Europe, and back again, with a message that’s impossible to ignore.
For over a decade, Unmute has been quietly – and now very loudly – rewriting what professional dance in South Africa looks like. This isn’t about ticking boxes or adding inclusion as an afterthought. Here, inclusion is the starting point.
What makes their work so compelling is the way it blends raw human experience with movement. Every performance feels intentional. Every story, lived. And this year, the company steps even further into the spotlight.
April sees Unmute heading onto the international stage with What We Can Do Together, a collaboration that brings together dancers from South Africa and Europe. The production leans into humour, fantasy, and powerful physical storytelling to challenge how we think about identity, ability, and connection.
It’s the kind of performance that doesn’t just entertain – it shifts perspective.
From Brussels to Aalst, the work introduces global audiences to a distinctly South African voice, while proving that stories rooted in authenticity travel far beyond borders.

While the international tour builds global momentum, the homecoming feels just as important. At the Suidoosterfees in Cape Town, audiences can experience Unmute, a contemporary work choreographed by Andile Vellem.
Here, something remarkable happens. South African Sign Language becomes more than communication – it becomes movement. It becomes art. It becomes the story. It’s deeply personal, incredibly expressive, and unlike anything most audiences have seen before.
South Africa’s creative industry is evolving, but access and representation still lag behind. With millions of South Africans living with disabilities, inclusive spaces in the arts remain limited. Unmute is changing that – not through conversation alone, but through action.
Their work creates opportunities where few existed before. It builds careers. It nurtures talent. And importantly, it challenges audiences to rethink what performance can look like.
Beyond the stage, Unmute Dance Theatre is investing in something far bigger than a single production. Through a three-year, full-time training programme, the company is building the next generation of performers – blending technique, theory, and inclusive teaching methods to develop not just dancers, but storytellers, facilitators, and future leaders in the arts.
But this work doesn’t stop at training. It feeds into a much bigger shift. One that centres representation, expands access, and challenges long-held ideas of what excellence in performance should look like.
And in a country where creative opportunities can often feel limited, this kind of investment carries real weight. As Unmute’s work continues to move across stages locally and internationally, one thing becomes clear – this isn’t a niche movement. It’s a redefinition of the industry, and a glimpse into the future of performance.
