Award-winning Wela Kapela Productions brings its latest cabaret, Damsel in Distress, to The Drama Factory in Somerset West for two performances only on Friday, 18 and Saturday, 19 September 2026.
Starring acclaimed performer Kiruna-Lind Devar, known for roles in Chicago and Mamma Mia!, the production follows Griselda, a reclusive librarian who has retreated into the safety of books after becoming trapped by fear.
An avid armchair traveller, Griselda explores Paris, New York, Germany and beyond through the pages of her favourite novels. But when the charming Edward Pamment begins visiting the library, his distinctly Mr Darcy-inspired presence awakens a curiosity about life beyond the walls of her carefully constructed world.
Featuring songs including I Love Paris, Mein Herr, At Seventeen, The Windmills of Your Mind, Bang-Bang and You Don’t Own Me, Damsel in Distress moves between fantasy and reality while exploring themes of fear, femicide, gender-based violence, courage and survival.
The cabaret marks Devar’s first solo production and features pianist and musical director Samantha Riedel, with multi-award-winning cabaret artist Daniel Anderson making his directorial debut. The story is written by award-winning writer Amanda Bothma.
With powerful storytelling, live music and a compelling blend of humour, heartbreak and hope, Damsel in Distress offers an intimate theatrical experience that explores what happens when a life lived through fiction finally has to confront reality.
