Cape Town City Ballet presents Veronica Paeper’s enchanting production of ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD at Artscape from 12 to 21 June 2026.
Inspired by Jacques Offenbach’s beloved comic operetta, this vibrant ballet is filled with humour, glamour and irresistible charm. Set in the lively world of the 1920s, the production features flapper girls, Mafia henchmen, energetic Can-Can dancers, a lavish penthouse pool for the Gods, and a magnificent score expertly arranged by Michael Tuffin.
Featuring original designs by Peter Cazalet, ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD takes audiences on a whimsical journey through love, chaos and divine mischief. The production will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Brandon Phillips, adding even greater splendour to this theatrical spectacle.
The story follows Eurydice as she elopes with Pluto, leaving her husband Orpheus unexpectedly relieved. However, when the meddling Gods become involved and the action shifts to a lively nightclub in the Underworld, the stage is set for a delightful adventure filled with laughter, romance and dazzling entertainment.
A timeless audience favourite, ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD promises a joyful celebration of music, dance and comedy that is not to be missed.
