Experience The Bacchae: An African Choral Ballet, a bold reimagining of Euripides’ timeless tragedy through a distinctly South African lens. This powerful production follows the arrival of the mysterious Dionysus, whose promise of freedom and spiritual awakening sparks a movement that challenges authority, tradition and power.
Blending classical ballet, African dance, choral music and a sweeping orchestral score, this world-first collaboration brings together Joburg Ballet and the University of Johannesburg Choir. Featuring an original score by Neo Muyanga, choreography by Mthuthuzeli November and direction by Jay Pather, the production explores themes of power, gender, ritual and rebellion with striking theatrical intensity.
Sensual, thought-provoking and visually spectacular, The Bacchae: An African Choral Ballet is an unforgettable fusion of ancient myth and contemporary African storytelling.
