We’re spoiled for choice when it comes to breathtaking sunset hikes in Cape Town and the Winelands. So, lace up your trail shoes, grab a waterproof (just in case) and get out there in nature.

Here is our curated list of how to chase Golden Hour on Foot: Our Top Autumn Outdoor Activities in Cape Town

Lion's Head Sunset Hike

Lion's Head Hike at Sunset

Start with a classic. Shoes on, water packed, WhatsApp on silent – Lion’s Head remains Cape Town’s most social sunset hike for good reason. The circular trail takes around 60 to 90 minutes up, depending on pace, with fixed chains near the summit for extra grip. Autumn brings cooler climbs and clearer skies, so views stretch from Camps Bay to the CBD. Aim for weekday afternoons if crowds feel hectic. Start descending before full dark, then cruise to Kloof Street for a sundowner or an early dinner. Tip: bring a light windbreaker – summit breezes arrive fast.

Kasteelspoort

Camps Bay Strip at Sunset

Kasteelspoort, accessed from the Camps Bay side of Table Mountain, suits hikers who enjoy variety underfoot. You’ll tackle ladders, rocky steps and shaded sections before reaching a saddle overlooking the Atlantic. The climb usually takes 90 minutes up, plus time for photos. This is among Table Mountain’s most rewarding sunset routes. Park near Camps Bay, carry at least a litre of water and move steadily through technical sections. After descending, refuel along Victoria Road – seafood spots and casual cafés are just five minutes away by car.

Silvermine Nature Reserve (Elephant’s Eye route)

Silvermine’s Elephant’s Eye route offers one of the gentlest sunset options on Table Mountain. Expect wide paths, gradual climbs and a total return time of roughly two hours. Autumn colours sweep across the plateau, while the cave lookout frames Noordhoek and False Bay beautifully. Access is via the Silvermine gate, so carry cash or card. Families love this trail. So do picnic fans. Comfortable trainers and light layers are all you need. Post-hike, drop into Noordhoek Farm Village for a loaf from The Foodbarn Deli, coffee from Café Roux or a warming hot chocolate.

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

Jonkershoek combines forest trails with mountain viewpoints just outside Stellenbosch. Choose a moderate loop like Swartboskloof or Panorama for sunset timing – most routes take two to three hours return. Cooler conditions and leafy colour line the river paths. Pay at the gate, pack water and allow extra time for stops. Afterwards, swing past Motherdough for sourdough pizza or pastries – newly opened and already popular with locals – or head into central Stellenbosch for a glass of wine. Practical bonus: clean bathrooms and picnic tables inside the reserve.

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

Perched above Franschhoek, Mont Rochelle has well-marked trails and vineyard views that shine during autumn. The Reservoir Route works beautifully for sunset, clocking in at around two hours return. The trail follows steady gradients and includes plenty of benches along the way for breaks. Entry is through the reserve gate, with day permits available onsite. As an added bonus, the trail is noticeably less busy than comparable sunset routes closer to the city. After your hike, head into Franschhoek village for tapas, wine tastings or an espresso martini.
