The New Renault Duster Turns the Cape Town–Hermanus Road Trip Into an Adventure
We drive the new Renault Duster from Cape Town to Hermanus and explore its performance, technology, safety, pricing and adventurous character.
Among the many trendy eateries lining Cape Town’s ever-busy Bree Street sits a dining destination that immediately pulls you in with attitude, atmosphere and a little theatrical flair. Maru Korean Steakhouse, the latest addition to the Pan Collection, brings a taste of modern Seoul to the Mother City — and it does so with confidence.
The moment diners step inside, the tone shifts. The space is dark and moody, layered with black finishes, glowing red neon lights and edgy design touches that feel both stylish and playful. Meanwhile, the soundtrack keeps the energy alive. There’s even a live DJ setting the pace for the evening, giving the restaurant a social buzz without turning the experience into a nightclub.
Then comes the food – and this is where things get seriously interesting.
Although the à la carte menu moves between luxury ingredients and comfort-food favourites, the spotlight falls squarely on two signature experiences: The Butcher’s Experience and By the Bucket. The first centres around premium local grass-fed beef and Wagyu cuts grilled Korean barbecue-style, while the second leans into crispy Korean fried chicken served in a sharing bucket. Honestly, choosing between them feels unnecessary. The smarter move is to arrive hungry and share both.
Each experience arrives with a collection of traditional Korean side dishes known as ban-chan, alongside a rich consommé. The beef selection also includes scallion salad, savoury egg soufflé and a deeply comforting doenjang stew packed with clams, mussels and anchovies.

Now, while Korean barbecue usually involves diners cooking their own meat, Maru takes a different route. Instead, the grilling happens at a dedicated BBQ station visible from the dining room before the cuts are presented tableside and sliced with kitchen shears. It adds a little theatre to the experience — and thankfully, the flavour lives up to the performance.
The beef was exceptionally tender, juicy and full of character. However, it was the combination of the meat with the various ban-chan dishes that made the meal memorable. Every bite seemed to unlock another unexpected flavour pairing.
The fried chicken also deserved its moment. One drumstick arrived impossibly crispy, while another was coated in a sticky soy garlic glaze that demanded extra napkins in the best possible way. Paired with four signature sauces, the chicken quickly became the kind of dish diners keep reaching back for “just one more piece” of.
Meanwhile, the cocktail menu keeps the playful mood alive with drinks inspired by K-pop culture. After chatting through preferred flavour profiles with one of the mixologists, a custom gin-based cocktail called “Love Scenario” arrived at the table — floral, bittersweet and dangerously easy to drink. Later, a non-alcoholic cocktail named “Wannabe” brought lighter, fizzy notes with bursts of boba that added an unexpected layer of fun.
As if the evening needed another surprise, the meal continued with truffle kimbap, cold perilla seed noodles and a Maru vanilla soft serve drizzled with soy caramel. Strange as it may sound, the sweet-and-umami combination somehow worked beautifully, ending the evening on a high note.
Maru Korean Steakhouse doesn’t simply serve dinner. It creates an experience around it. Between the atmosphere, the bold flavours and the lively energy flowing through the restaurant, this is the kind of Bree Street spot people will talk about long after the bill arrives.
